AUs, disobey smally
”Wait for me in the Council chamber until I return.”
Most assumed disobedience came to Anakin like breathing. But it was more nuanced than that. He was always just trying to do what he thought was right. The most right. And sometimes what he thought was the right thing to do conflicted with what the Council decided was the right thing for him to do. And when he was convinced that what needed to be done flouted orders, he didn’t much care what the Council thought.
This just wasn’t one of those times.
He didn’t know what the right thing to do was.
It was more than just wanting to save Padme from dying in childbirth.
For weeks, Anakin had been left alone with a master manipulator who lied through his teeth about all the things Anakin cared about, twisting them so every item looked sideways. Misaligned. The lies: the Jedi Council had a nefarious plot to take over the Republic from the Senate, Obi-Wan was wrapped up in that plot whether he knew it or not because he was on the Council, Padme was also naively being manipulated by the Jedi too for her political clout… Obi-Wan and Padme were…
Anakin didn’t want to believe any of it, but a haunting voice in the back of his head whispered: then why did the Council order him to commit what was essentially treason?
Oh sure, Palpatine was the Sith lord all along, but…
But… but…
The world tilted again.
When Anakin’s moral compass was fraught with moments like this, Obi-Wan was always by his side, the temperance of logic to Anakin’s passionate action.
Obi-Wan knew answers when they failed Anakin, Anakin knew what actions to take when direction stumped Obi-Wan. It was their thing, these last three years of the Clone Wars had shown them they were complements to each other.
Only, Obi-Wan wasn’t here this time.
Mace Windu told Anakin he couldn’t contact Obi-Wan. He’d told him to stay in the Council chamber until Mace Windu returned from confronting Palpatine. And if Anakin obeyed, Master Windu would finally trust Anakin.
Anakin sat, he paced, he sat some more.
He just wanted to do the right thing…
But staying in this room, doing nothing but waiting felt like the complete opposite of doing the right thing.
And Anakin had never wanted Mace Windu’s trust! Why was he obeying now, of all times?
But before he disobeyed in the most drastic way, he suddenly had a brief moment of clarity and decided he owed it to his friend to only disobey by half. Because if presented with the two options, he was sure Obi-Wan would tell him to disobey small-y. First.
The Council chambers had the capacity for long-range communications, the kind that were private and linked with every Council member no matter where they were in the galaxy.
It was a simple press of a few buttons and Anakin was seconds from talking to someone who might have a chance of helping him.
